Content
We will be reading a story weekly in our anthology. In addition to this, we will meet in guided reading groups to get on-level practice in a small group setting. We will also have vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, grammar, and writing components in our weekly reading practice. Furthermore, students will have an AR goal to reach by the end of the quarter by selecting books at their level that interest them.
Procedures
Students will work out of a reading packet each week. In this packet will be all the worksheets they need to practice our skill work for the week. These include vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar practice. Students will also need to read twenty minutes a night in their AR book and log their reading at the back of their packet. They must also test on their AR books to meet their AR goal by the end of the quarter. If students complete their daily packet work, they have some independent reading time. At the end of the week, students will take their reading test.
Grading
Students will be graded on participation, packet work, tests, logs, and their AR goal. At the end of the week, packets will be collected and graded along with AR logs. On Fridays, we take our weekly test. Finally, our AR goal completion grade is entered at the end of the quarter.
Lates & Redos
Students lose 10% for lates in order to encourage responsibility. Students MUST redo daily work (mainly packets) that earns a grade below 70% to ensure understanding of the concepts. They can earn back ½ credit on this work. Tests cannot be redone because of all that goes into preparing for the tests (study guides, games, etc.). If a child prepares well, they should pass the first time around with no problem.
