Content
This year in Social Studies we’ll be learning about America’s History up to the Civil War.
Procedures
The procedure for every chapter in Social Studies will be the same for the most part. Each student will receive a packet for the entire chapter. The packets may not go PERFECTLY with the newer textbooks. It works out well, though, because we get a variety of information. The packet should be the main source of information because the book is used as a supplement. I’ve written the page numbers for each lesson for the corresponding readings, though, to aid in studying. Within this packet, I have typed up the notes for every lesson, leaving out key words that they will fill in. Some days they will do lesson readings in partners. Other days, we’ll do it together. In both cases, we’ll go over all the notes, discussing what we’re covering, as a whole class. And I can already tell our discussions will be quite lengthy, in-depth, and interesting with this group which is GREAT! Furthermore, to aid us in our note-taking and discussions, I’ve created a Power Point for every chapter. At the end of most lessons, we’ll have a review worksheet that will be assigned in the packet. We also try to get in an activity or project as often as possible to spice things up.
Grading
Students will be graded on packet work, tests, and activities/projects. At the end of the chapter, we’ll correct the packets for one grade. We then review for two days by using a study guide that comes home two nights before the test as well as a group game the day before the test. Study guides will not be graded, but students can make sure they have the correct answers as we go over them together after our review game. It is a tool for the students to study with and it’s their choice how they use it. The test weighs twice as much as the packet. We also do some fun activities and projects that, depending on the work involved, students may also receive a grade for. Four huge and very enjoyable projects are the Native American artifacts, the Explorer power points, Space Nation, and a Day in the Life of Lewis & Clark. Don’t panic! For projects, a majority if not all the work is done here because most are group projects.
Lates & Redos
Students loose 10% for lates in order to encourage responsibility. Students MUST redo daily work (mainly packets) that earns a grade below 70% to ensure understanding of the concepts. They can earn back ½ credit on this work. Tests cannot be redone because of all that goes into preparing for the tests (study guides, games, etc.). If a child prepares well, they should pass the first time around with no problem.
